Successful Student Advocacy Trip Sponsored by HIMSS AZ Chapter
Group of students provided unique opportunity to experience federal government in-person
HIMSS AZ Chapter is committed to educating members as well as future generations in becoming engaged, active civic leaders. As part of this commitment, we recently sponsored a Student Advocacy Trip to Washington, D.C., April 12-18, 2024.
The trip provided the students, who are primarily non-traditional students from vulnerable populations, with a unique, invaluable opportunity to witness the workings of the federal government firsthand. This immersive experience was designed to foster a deeper understanding of the democratic process, inspire civic engagement, and build a sense of community among this diverse student body.
Collaborating to prepare the students
AZ HIMSS Chapter engaged industry leaders, such as HIMSS and the American Health Information Management Association, that have created an advocacy space to share important topics with the students. Additionally, we provided training to prepare the students to meet with congressional members and promote grassroots efforts in the health information space.
Experiencing American history and learning from current leaders
During this trip to our nation’s capital, students experienced the epicenter of American history- visiting iconic landmarks and standing at the very sites where pivotal decisions were made. They explored the roots of our democracy and gained insights into the historical context that has shaped the United States’ laws and policies. In addition to monuments, museums and exhibits, landmarks visited included the:
- Supreme Court
- U.S. Capitol Building
- White House
Crucially, our students had the rare opportunity to interact with important government officials, including a Supreme Court justice and elected state representatives. This once-in-a-lifetime experience assisted in bridging the gap between theory and practice in their education. Furthermore, this direct engagement with decisionmakers allowed students to comprehend the intricacies of the legislative process and witness the impact of policies. Such interactions and experiences provided a unique perspective going beyond classroom learning, encouraging critical thinking and inspiring a passion for active citizenship.
Long term positive impact to the community
In addition to the educational aspects, this trip addressed the unique challenges faced by many online school communities. By bringing students together in-person, lasting connections were fostered which will help to build a stronger community. Many of the students, who are primarily first-generation college students, have multiple, intersecting identities that have historically led to their underrepresentation in higher education. This trip was not only a chance to break down barriers, but also an opportunity to create a supportive network that extends beyond the trip itself.
Recognizing the financial constraints faced by these students, the AZ HIMSS Chapter is proud to have been able to subsidize and cover most of the costs associated with this incredible opportunity. Through this trip, we aspire to equip students with the knowledge, inspiration, and connections necessary to become the next generation of leaders, overcoming barriers and contributing to a more inclusive and diverse future.
